Subject Profile
- Age range: 25-34
- Previous daily use: 2.5 hours
- Primary replacement activity: Walking, reading, face-to-face conversations
- Support system: Told close friends about the experiment
Week 1: Withdrawal
Day 1-2
The first 48 hours were the hardest. I reached for my phone 47 times on Day 1, according to my screen time tracker. Each time, I had to consciously stop myself from opening TikTok.
Day 3-5
The phantom vibrations started. I'd feel my phone buzz, check it, and realize no notification had arrived. My brain was craving the dopamine hit of new content.
Day 6-7
By the end of Week 1, the compulsive checking dropped to 12 times per day. I started noticing things: the sound of birds outside my window, the texture of my coffee, the expressions of people on the subway.
Screen time change: -40% Reported symptoms: Restlessness, FOMO, phantom vibrations Coping mechanism: Replaced phone time with 20-minute walks
Week 2-3: Stabilization
New Routines Formed
- Morning: 10-minute stretch instead of scrolling
- Commute: Audiobook or observation
- Evening: Cooking without background video
Unexpected Benefits
- Sleep: Fell asleep 30 minutes faster
- Focus: Could read for 45 minutes without checking phone
- Conversations: Actually listened to people instead of thinking about what to film
Remaining Triggers
- Boredom (waiting in line, commercial breaks)
- Social events where everyone else was filming
- Stressful days when I wanted mindless escape
Week 4: Integration
Decision
I decided to keep TikTok deleted permanently, but with one exception: I can re-download it for 30 minutes on Friday evenings if I choose to. So far, I haven't used that exception.
Long-term Strategy
- Phone: Moved to second home screen, behind a folder
- Replacement: Subscribed to a weekly magazine for "content" without the algorithm
- Social: Told friends to send me videos directly if they think I'd like them
